Day Trip to Kuks Castle
Baron Anton von Sporck and Prague are intricately connected, as the town of Kuks owes much of its historical significance and architectural beauty to the vision and patronage of this influential nobleman. Baron Sporck (1662–1738). He was a prominent Czech nobleman and art enthusiast who played a significant role in the cultural and artistic development of Bohemia during the Baroque period. Known for his eclectic interests and progressive ideas, Sporck was a passionate patron of the arts, sciences, and education.
Completed in 1720, the Kuks Hospital is the centerpiece of Sporck’s legacy in the town and you can still visit his baroque pharmacy during the tour, his home, his family crypt and walk his private nature trail with bizarre sculptures along the way. He commissioned renowned architects and artists to design and construct the Kuks Hospital, a Baroque complex that served as a hospital, pharmacy, and sanctuary for the poor and sick.
The hospital complex also houses an art gallery which we will visit featuring a remarkable collection of Baroque sculptures by renowned Czech sculptor Matthias Braun. Admire Braun’s masterpieces, including the renowned allegorical sculptures of Virtues and Vices lining the hospital’s colonnade.
